8/23 Skidaway Island State Park

edited 8/24
About 16 miles SSE of Savannah, GA for 2 nights. Laundry day.

There were many, perhaps a hundred or so, road-side stands selling sweet grass baskets along the road just prior to Mount Pleasant. Some were just a few feet apart and were not much more than frames to hold and display the baskets and their car parked behind it. No way for us to stop without blocking the highway.

Thought we were going to need to spend some time in Savannah to get the MH repaired.  We had stopped at the welcome center just inside the state line and were parked and giving the dogs a potty break. As we came back inside a semi was rolling backwards straight at the driver side mid-section. I laid on the horn and he stopped within inches of us. When he pulled forward I walked up to his cab and said WTF as there wasn't any reason for him to be backing,  the area in front of him was clear.  He said that he didn't realize that it was rolling.  Oh so close, that one was.

We were invaded with little red ants at Huntington park the last 2 nights. Hope they find a way out soon.

This is another pretty park, full of palms, palmettos, and large live oaks dripping with spanish moss. Feels like a scene from a horror movie as it feels like your driving through a tunnel of it for quite some distance in many places.

This is the dude that nearly ended our trip.
Just after he drove ahead from almost ramming the side of the MH.

It seems ants are a common problem in these parts. Had the park ranger put down some ant killer granuals around the MH tires and hookups today and picked up a container of 'Home Defense' barrier spray to take with us.

  1. Yikes! That was a close one. Red ants, eh? I'm sure you'll find something to put out and get rid of them quick. There's all kinds of crawlies down there.

  2. Never seen so many in the MH before, it was crawling with them. The park ranger spread some granuals around so that should stop any more from coming in I hope.

The semi thing felt like slow motion and there wasn't anything that we could do but honk and watch. We were perpendicular behind him so it would have hit the driver side midsection and perhaps even pushed us on our side. Phew, too close for sure. It certainly would have been the end of the trip.

  3. I love the Spanish moss and magnolia trees in the south. I remember being at Hilton Head. Dave and the other couple we were with golfed and I collected Spanish moss. Got back to the condo and had to kill the bugs by putting in oven, microwave or freezing. It took all nite. Boxed it up and took it home cuz I wanted to decorate with it for Christmas which was a month away. Got home and opened the box and 2 spiders scurried out. I got that outside so fast and got rid of it. I worked so hard to get it ready to bring home and then ditched it anyway. Lesson learned. Enjoy the view.
Dave just left for Canada this morning. I was watching the today show and they were talking about possible storm in next 7 days. Called Dave and told him I was concerned about possible 7-10 inches of rain in Naples. He made me feel a little batter by saying that our community hasn't seen damage in 30 yrs. I'll still worry hopefully not as much. We have 1st floor condo. Yikes.

    1. Yikes, nothing like a spider crawling out to send shivers down your spine.
I see that the Tampa area has a 60 percent chance of rain for the next 10 days. Right now all I can think of is ants looking for higher ground, as in RV to escape the flooded tunnels. We still have a few stragglers inside but the numbers have dwindled significantly. May need umbrellas when we visit Missy and Bridgette.
I guess this is hurricane season but 7 to 10 still sounds like a lot. Hoping that it doesn't cause you any trouble.
